In the Fort McMurray area, oil sands mining and processing is the main industry. The largest companies are Albian Sands, Canadian Natural Resource ltd, Imperial Oil ltd, Suncor Energy Inc. and Syncrude Canada, all of which provide strong support for the CIM Oil Sands Branch. Smaller oil sands producers, manufacturers and suppliers also play an important role.
Branch events are held on a regular, from January through November, and have strong technical programs. These technical sessions usually include one or two speakers per night, some international, and include many speakers found through local and neighbouring Branches, local suppliers, and vendors. A social night always follows or precedes the technical talks, with food and drinks to encourage everyone to have fun and network. Besides the technical sessions, the annual CIM Centennial Golf Tournament is held in the summer.
The branch works with other local groups, such as the local chapter of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists, & Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGA). The CIM meetings qualify for professional development points that APEGA members must earn throughout the year. The branch is actively involved in the community, annually doing fundraisers to support the Northern Lights Foundation, which raises funds to support and promote health care in the Region of Wood Buffalo.
The branch celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2016 and is still as popular as ever.
